Gary Freitas passed away on June 29, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a lifetime of memories that will forever be cherished by those who knew him.
Born in Oakland, California on July 17, 1941, Gary was the oldest of five siblings. He was preceded in death by his twin brothers, Ronnie Freitas and Donnie Freitas, and is survived by his sisters, Sandy Agrella and Joanne Silva.
Gary is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Denise Freitas; his son, Keith Freitas; and his daughter, Renee Ogle. He was a proud grandfather to Matthew and Aidan Freitas and Addison and Alaina Ogle, each of whom brought him immeasurable joy.
Gary was a man of strong convictions. A proud Teamster, he believed in standing up for what was right and never hesitated to defend his beliefs. Those who knew him well also knew his legendary stubborn streak. One family story that will always bring smiles is the time his determination left him stuck in a pond for hours, a perfect example of his unwillingness to back down.
After retiring, Gary fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing a home in Oregon, where he could go to the coast to crab and fish. In his final days, one of his greatest wishes was simply to see his boat again; a testament to the peace and happiness it brought him.
Gary was also famous among family and friends for his love of a good bargain. If there was a coupon to clip or a deal to be found, Gary was determined to find it. His resourcefulness and knack for stretching a dollar became one of the many endearing traits his family will always remember.
Gary liked to give back to his community in variety of volunteer positions, including the Myrtle Creek Lions club where he started the annual Crab feed. He chaired and judged for the international Chili Society's local chili cookoff competition for several years, he volunteered at Mercy hospital, and for the last five years was a Docent at the Wildlife Safari.
For much of his life, Gary wasn't interested in traveling. That all changed when he met Denise. Together they explored the world, creating unforgettable memories in places that once seemed unimaginable. From China and Russia to Portugal, and Australia, Denise opened the door to adventures enriched Gary's life and gave them countless stories to share. These travels also created many long lasting friendships with their fellow travelers.
Above all, Gary was a fighter. Through life's challenges, he showed resilience, determination, and unwavering strength. Beneath his tough exterior was a kind, loving, and gentle man whose greatest pride was his family. He loved deeply, cared quietly, and left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Gary's legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the lessons he taught through his example, the laughter inspired by his stories, and the love he shared throughout his life. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
The celebration of life will take place at the Wildlife Safari Cheryl Ford Center in Winston Oregon on Saturday September 12, 2026 at 1:00pm.
